Timkat is Ethiopia's most colorful and important festival — the Ethiopian Orthodox celebration of Epiphany (the baptism of Christ), held each January, when priests carry the tabot (a replica of the Ark of the Covenant) in grand processions of white-robed faithful, chanting and dancing, to a body of water for a dawn blessing and re-affirmation of baptismal vows.
A UNESCO-recognized intangible heritage, it's most spectacular in the historic city of Gondar, where the ceremony takes place at the 17th-century royal bath of Fasilides, an unforgettable immersion in ancient Christian tradition.
