Run every Patriots' Day in April, the Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon and the sport's most prestigious — a point-to-point course from Hopkinton to Boston's Boylston Street that runners must qualify to enter, lined by half a million spectators.
The day is a New England institution: the Wellesley "scream tunnel," the Newton hills and Heartbreak Hill, and a euphoric finish downtown. Even as a spectator, it's one of the great days to be in Boston.
