Each October, the high-desert sky over Albuquerque fills with more than 500 hot-air balloons for the world's largest ballooning event. The signature moment is the Mass Ascension, when hundreds of balloons lift off together in waves just after sunrise — a spectacle that draws photographers and travelers from every continent.
Beyond the morning ascensions, the nine-day fiesta packs in special-shape rodeos (think giant flying animals and characters), the glowing after-dark "Balloon Glow," and evening fireworks. It's an early-morning event by nature: gates open before dawn and the best flying happens in the cool, calm first hours of the day.
